Now that you've learned how to draw a character, I'm going to teach you how to color them! It is most important to have the PROPER MATERIALS when you go to color. You will be much more successful in your coloring if you use quality art supplies. I use Strathmore Drawing Paper, Micron Pens, Prismacolor Premier Pencils, and Prismacolor Verithin Pencils. Start by LINING your drawing. Simply use the Micron Pen to go over the pencil lines. Once you are done inking, wait a little bit for the pen to dry, and then carefully erase the pencil lines so the ink doesn't smear. Next, we can color the SKIN. Colored pencils work best when they are layered, so I start by coloring all of the skin area with PC914 (Cream). This is obviously not the final color of the skin, but it is a good base because the pencils blend better when there are lots of layers. I do the next layer with PC927 (Light Peach). The final step is to SHADE the skin. I use PC941 (Light Umber) to add soft shadows, and then blend them back out with PC927 (Light Peach). I like to use either PC993 (Hot Pink) or Verithin 746 1/2 (Tuscan Red) for the lips and shading the cheeks. I used the Tuscan Red for this drawing. The key to good shading is to use light strokes and layer. If you want lighter skin, go over the entire face with PC938 (White), if you want the skin to be darker you can add more of the Light Umber. For the HAIR, start by coloring with the lightest color, and then layer darker colors on top. To add texture, use the Verithin pencils. For this drawing, I used PC914 (Cream), PC941 (Light Umber), and Verithin 746 (Dark Brown). The last step on the face, is to color the EYES. You'll want to pick at least two colors, and start by coloring with the lighter color, and then shading with the darker color in the middle. I used PC989 (Chartreuse) and Verithin 746 (Dark Brown). For coloring the CLOTHES, try to find colors that will work well together, and try different textures. I made the sweater more grainy to show that it is fuzzy/knitted. This sweater is a combination of PC941 (Light Umber), PC922 (Poppy Red), and Verithin 746 1/2 (Tuscan Red). The jeans are colored with PC1023 (Cloud Blue) and Verithin 747 1/2 (Cool Grey 70%). Try different color combinations, be creative, and keep practicing!
